About

The Shepherd's Shelf is an emergency food cupboard. The goal is to provide enough food to feed a household for three days. It serves households living in Montgomery County.

Monday through Thursday 10am - 2pm

Mission Statement

Responding to our belief that all humanity matters to God, the Shepherd’s Shelf of Christ Lutheran Church seeks to serve all persons of our community who request food assistance with acceptance, love and dignity.  All persons are served without regard to race, religion, national origin, or any other factor. No attempt will ever be made to ask those we serve to confess or adhere to any set of beliefs, nor shall membership in or support of Christ Lutheran Church be a requirement for our services.

When is Shepherd's Shelf open?

The Shepherd's Shelf is open for distribution to clients on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6:30 pm until 8:00pm. There is also a daytime distribution option on Tuesday mornings from 10am until 11am.


How often may clients get food from Shepherd's Shelf?

Clients may come twice a month.

How do I register to be a client of the Shepherd’s Shelf?

No preregistration is required. All clients are registered at their first visit.

When can I drop off food donations?​

The Shepherd's Shelf gratefully accepts donations any time that the church office is open. Those hours are normally Monday–Thursday 10am–2pm. If you are interested in dropping off a larger donation or would like to run a food drive, please contact the Food Pantry administrator at shepherdsshelf@christlc.org.

Where does the food come from?

The food comes from donations from the members of Christ Lutheran Church, other local churches, community groups, local food drives, local farms, fraternal organizations and local corporations.

A large portion of the food distributed is purchased from agencies such as Philabundance and regional food wholesalers as well as active relationships with Giant-Harleysville, Freddy Hill Farms, and Lehigh Valley Dairies.

During the summer months, the Shepherd's Shelf Sharing Garden provides fresh organic produce grown on Christ Lutheran Church property as well as donations from Garden of Health, Souderton Mennonite Garden, Advent Lutheran Church and other local gardeners.

We receive diapers and Feminine Hygiene products from the Mitzvah Circle Foundation.

The Shepherd’s Shelf is also receiving weekly produce donations from Living Hope Farm.

Who are the people working on distribution nights?

The staff are volunteers from Christ Lutheran Church, other local churches, members of the community, boy scouts and clients.

The Shepherd's Shelf has a leadership team.

The Shapiro Administration launched a new online tool to better connect PA residents with food, housing, childcare and more. The navigator has a zip code based search and can connect people to resources in that immediate zip code area including food resources, housing, transit, healthcare, legal services, work, education, care, financial assistance, etc

Annual Richard D. Stephens Memorial Golf Outing

Registration is open for the 17th annual Richard D. Stephens Memorial Golf Outing benefitting the Shepherd’s Shelf Emergency Food Cupboard. 100% of the proceeds support the Shepherd’s Shelf. Help the food insecure in our neighborhood and enjoy a wonderful day of golf.

Shelf History

Shepherd's Shelf opened in March 2004 serving 3 families in need. The Shelf now serves approximately 100 households per month.

Shepherd's Shelf serves families living in the Souderton Area School District, as well as Kulpsville, Lansdale and Towamencin.

Shepherd's Shelf is a Montgomery County Community Action Development Commission (CADCOM) cupboard. Through this relationship, Shepherd's Shelf receives state funding through TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program) and USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).

Individuals and families shop off a predetermined list of shelf stable products and choose items that best fir their household needs. Milk, eggs, cheese, frozen meat, baby food, diapers, paper products and toiletries are also provided by client choice.

Shepherd's Shelf is a member of the Nutrition Coalition - a collaboration of food cupboards serving the North Penn and Indian Valley communities.
